The Walk for Hunger 2023

Hello All,

On Sunday, May 7th, I will be participating in Project Bread's Walk for Hunger, bringing people together again for the first time in 3 years. Both my husband, Bob, and my son, Adam, will be joining me!! The Walk for Hunger is the oldest continual pledge walk in the country and one of the few walks dedicated to social justice. We are approaching this year’s Walk with a sincere commitment to ending hunger in our state and would be so delighted if you would consider sponsoring us.

Every year before the Walk for Hunger, I take a deep dive into the world of food insecurity to review the latest surveys and research related to this complex issue. This year, I was stunned at what I found:

Nearly a third of Massachusetts adults are struggling to get enough to eat. At least 1.8 million people — or 32 percent of the state’s adult population — are food-insecure and the burden lies most heavily on Black and LatinX communities and families with children.

Massachusetts had the greatest percentage increase in food insecurity (59%) and in food-insecure children (102%) due to the pandemic in the country.

One out of three college students has experienced food insecurity. In Massachusetts, 37% of public university students are food insecure.

Project Bread has the right idea...this organization approaches its work with the knowledge that people, not food, are at the center of hunger. Through programs and policies meant to get at the root of what causes hunger, Project Bread tackles the systems that create food insecurity, with the goal of permanently solving hunger for children, families, and adults in Massachusetts.

Adam, Bob, and I will be walking with the Family Table team this year and a percentage of the money that we raise will go directly to this program. As many of you know, my family has been volunteering at Family Table, a food pantry supported in part by Project Bread and run by Jewish Family and Children Services, for many years.

Bottom line, we need to raise A LOT of money this year as the circumstances related to food insecurity are extreme.
