The Walk for Hunger, May 7, 2023
After three years of being virtual, the Walk for Hunger is back to actual. However, to save overhead and have more funds for direct service, the format has been changed. Instead of walking 20 miles to Newton Center and back, the course will be three miles around Boston Common. That suits me fine, as my aging legs would prefer. However, whatever the distance of the course, hunger still exists.
I have been doing “The Walk’ for over twenty-five years, which is more than half of its existence. And still hunger exists for 700,000 people in Massachusetts, despite my efforts and the efforts of thousands of others over the past five decades. Hunger is not solved in any one year, with just one Walk.
Project Bread records indicate that I have raised a cumulative total of over $83,000 since 1999, the earliest data in their current computer system. The tribute for this goes not to me, but to all of you who have supported me year after year after year. Thank you, once again.
I regret that I will be walking again this year. In a country with our wealth, it is truly regrettable that the Walk has to be held again. And the economic times plus the pandemic are affecting the least fortunate the most. The numbers of hungry people are growing, with one-third of these being children.
My supporters, all of you, are my heroes. Every year, I think that this will be my last walk, actual or virtual. But then I think that I can not afford to give up the pledges coming from my supporters. You keep me walking, year after year!
