Volunteer at the Walk

Each year, more than 2,000 Volunteers work together to make The Walk for Hunger fun, safe, and successful.

Volunteer in the morning, the afternoon, or all day—it’s up to you. Whether you are beginning or continuing your commitment to helping hungry people, we have something for everyone!

Volunteers are also welcome to raise money and get credit for walking all 20 miles! Raise $500 or more and automatically become part of the Heart & Sole Circle. When you become a Heart & Sole Volunteer, you will receive a special T-shirt, be invited to special events throughout the year, and be listed in our annual report.

Be a Stationary Marshal Walk Day Coordinator

The Stationary Marshal Walk Day Coordinator (SM-WDC) holds a key position at The Walk for Hunger. This person is responsible for the safety of Walkers throughout an assigned section of the 20 mile Walk route. Each SM-WDC manages a large group of Volunteers and ensures that they are placed strategically throughout the Walk route and are both directing and encouraging Walkers.

Be a Stationary Marshal

We need smiling faces to keep Walkers safe and happy––and to direct them along the Walk route. You can choose your favorite part of the route and we’ll provide the training (not to mention a free Volunteer T-shirt).  Great position to do with a buddy!

Be a First Aid Volunteer

Are you a nurse, doctor, or EMT? Help keep our Walkers safe and healthy by administering basic first aid on the Boston Common and at each checkpoint along the Walk route.

Be a Setup or Breakdown Volunteer

Don’t mind getting a little dirty and volunteering before the sun rises or after it sets? Join our Setup or Breakdown Crews and help unload and load supply boxes and setup and takedown tables, chairs, and tents on the Common. This is a great team-building opportunity for groups!

Be a Tabulation Volunteer

Can you use an adding machine? Are you a data person? We need Volunteers to help us tabulate registration forms on Walk Day. Be one of the first to know the total amount of funds raised!

Be a Midnight Decoration Volunteer

Are you a night owl? Do you like balloons? We need five Volunteers to help our decorations team on the Boston Common from midnight to 5am the night before the Walk. Be a part of building the Start and Finish lines!
